Ahhhhh I generally struggle a lot when I don’t have context so the first reference to ‘Dirty Jobs’ threw me off the topic. I had to watch the video many times to understand. Each time I watch I understood more specific details. Like Heather noted: ‘blue collar’ and ‘foot in the door’ were new to me. Conjunctions besides AND OR were clear in Brian’s description of needing more than high school FINISH or being told that he didn’t need to go to college HIT. There was a bunch of vocabulary that we just went over in Brian’s description of his experience (welding, woodwork, construction, etc.). I was impressed by his people skills. He had found ways to shift the focus at job interviews to his breadth of experience, his perseverance and flexibility until they couldn’t say no to him. On the job he used his solitude to focus on work and impress his supervisors. He also acknowledged the people who had influenced him – Mike Rose and his father. Like many other people mentioned, I struggled with Brian’s sign even though he was super clear. His facial expression conveyed so much of the story. The details of the fire truck were very compelling and showed the passion he has for welding that he had mentioned earlier.
