One part I’m not fully clear on is at 1:47 in the video. Is the signer describing the wardrobe using classifiers? I haven’t seen that combination before, but it looked like describing the shape of the wardrobe and the hangers/interior as well?

I enjoyed the man’s description of the house and could tell which rooms he was describing, but without the pictures to follow it would have been harder. I might have missed some.

I wasn’t sure of what he meant by ‘wood’ after indicating where the garage was. I thought he meant there was a garage and woodshop off to the side of the house. After rewatching it I thought maybe he meant the garage doors were wood, though he didn’t sign ‘door’. I finally decided that, since he indicated the house was made of stone, he probably meant the garage was made of wood, but I’m not 100% sure of that.

I loved how he described the front door and the pattern in the glass and showed the glass side-lights by the door.

In the living room at the end he signed something about the fireplace I think? He used a sign before it where both B hands rolled over each other forward. That isn’t fire, nor piano, but it led up to him describing the arc of the fireplace shape and then describing the high ceilings. I’m not quite sure what that sign was. I thought it meant something like ‘moving on’ or ‘going forward’.

I loved his informal dining room description. I clearly understood the window, table and seat placement and the flower arrangement on the table and the view of trees outside.

When he moved upstairs to the bedrooms and the kid’s area I understood all that, but I could not figure out exactly what he was spelling after kid: kid area, kid loft, kid space? I think I got the jist, but I really need practice with all my finger spelling. I couldn’t make out any of his spelling except for the address.

He was obsessed with all the chandeliers and did a great job on those as well as the outside pool and play ground area. He loved the word fancy, too, but to be fair the place was very, very fancy!

All in all I don’t think there were many parts I had so much difficulty with that I wouldn’t understand the basic layout of the house, but I did rewatch it several times, and eventually slowed it down to try to get the small details.

@Kayla, I think @ 1:47 he is describing the cushion-like/soft headboard. I’m not sure what the sign at 1:48 is though?

@Jackie, I agree…without pictures it would have been harder to follow for sure. I think you are right about him indicating the garage door was wood – the picture definitely helped in that case!

The part that tripped me up was when he was describing the kitchen. I didn’t think it was clear that there was an island and when describing the sink, he showed where the sink was and then described other parts of the kitchen then came back to the sink? Was he saying there were 2 sinks?

I also enjoyed his use of the words beautiful, fancy, and nice! But Jackie is right – it is a fancy place!

Overall, I was able to get the general idea of the layout and contents of each room. However, for this as with most ASL videos (including Jason’s pre-recorded lectures), I have trouble understanding the content at full speed. The same especially goes for fingerspelling. I almost always need to watch at reduced speed. As others noted, the pictures helped a lot, so I’m not sure how I would have done without them. I probably should have covered up that part of the screen for the first few views to determine my level of understanding without them. Jason, think about adding this suggestion to the directions for future classes?

I got most of the video, with the exception of the fingerspelling in the loft/kids room. Watched that so many times on super slow and still can’t figure it out. The kitchen description was particularly good with the table, the outside view through the large windows and even the flower vase on the table. I may not have understood every single sign, but the intention was clear. I definitely missed padded headboard. Louis, I’m glad you admitted to watching the fingerspelling on slow. I do that too, even though I spend a lot of time with the Vicars app. As far as the Fancy house, he used that sign enough that I began to wonder if it meant something else ?

The signer provides a great description of the house, but it is harder to grasp the layout without the images. The transitions between rooms were so quick that I had to rewatch the video to fully understand where each room is. I got a bit lost when he was describing the smallest room in the house. I believe he was using classifiers to describe the shape of the ceiling light, as that was the image shown, but I am not completely sure.

I had the same issue. I had a harder time following the layout than in Jason’s examples and I needed the pictures to help. I wasn’t sure what was being described at the end of the bed in the master bedroom.

I was also confused about the same moment around 1:47. Without the video I would have thought he was describing a bench at the foot of the bed or something.

Agree on the layout not being as clear as Jason’s examples. I’m certain I couldn’t draw the floorplan. He also didn’t start with how many levels the home was.
At the beginning, his description of the roofline didn’t feel complete – the house has a number of different angles to its roof.
Once he got outside, it wasn’t clear to me where things were in relationship to each other.

Very good descriptions of objects/ rooms themselves. The actual layout of the house is unclear as the signer just kinda moved into describing different rooms rather than the connection to the front entrance (start point).

I’m so grateful to read others’ comments here! I felt as though I could roughly follow what he was signing, and I also would have been a bit lost without some imagery to help me keep up. (However, I have terrible spacial aptitude and so I knew this lesson would be a big challenge for me.) I might have appreciated more of a walkthrough (enter through door, hallway ahead, to left X room, to Y room, etc) but I understand that without imagery depicting that movement or layout that would be impossible. This was a really interesting challenge!

I was generally able to follow the signer in this video but only because of the photos that accompanied it. If I had to draw out what he would signed it would most likely not match up. It was very hard to find where things were located in reference to one another. I also had a hard time with the speed of the fingerspelling and had to slow the video down or watch it multiple times before understanding.
